The winning students for the best anti-vaping posters have been chosen, with the top designs to be displayed throughout Surrey’s schools to steer youth away from using the substance.

The recent contest was in partnership with the Surrey school district and Fraser Health’s Healthy School’s Program, open to both elementary and secondary students. With a total of 26 submissions, six winners were chosen, three from elementary and three from high school.

“We were blown away by the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness put into this year’s entries,” Dakota Grange, acting assistant manager of the district’s Safe Schools department said in a news release.

“We wanted to have a youth-led initiative to have students open those important conversations with each other.”

From elementary, Sanvi Basal from Frost Road got first place, while Leo Meng from Rosemary Heights received second and Johanna Mathew from Senator Reid has claimed third.

Meanwhile, Aryan Sachdeva from Tamanawis Secondary came in first in the high school crowd, Jasneet Dhillon from Queen Elizabeth got second place and Arneet Kaur from Frank Hurt was third.

“The hope is that by having these posters in hallways and on monitors throughout our schools, students will think twice before putting their health in jeopardy,” Grange said.

In addition to having their artwork displayed in schools throughout the district, each student who participated this year were given gift cards and the six winners received movie passes. The contest is scheduled to take place once again next year.
