Some three dozen volunteers pitched in at the Lower Mainland Green Team’s first White Rock event of 2024.
Held Saturday (March 23), the focus was on Ruth Johnson Park – in the 14600-block of North Bluff Road – where seven cubic metres of invasive English ivy and English holly was removed.
“Despite a rainy day, everyone was positive and excited to be outside and meeting new people, which showed through their fantastic work and smiling faces. We all laughed when we realized we were becoming one with the mud!” a news release recounting the day’s efforts states.
Volunteers, it notes, hailed from all background and experience levels, and included families, students, first timers and even some who were new to Canada.
Haiyan Xie, who turned out with her three-year-old daughter, told fellow attendees that she studied plants and used to organize similar activities in China, the release continues.
New to the Green Team’s activities this year are a series of 10 plant signs “which will become a visual and educational staple” at events around the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island.

Saturday’s event was supported financially by the City of White Rock, and was the first of seven LMGT activities planned for the city this year.
