It was a busy Mother’s Day for the White Rock Tritons U18 senior team, who played a double header against the Victoria Mariners Sunday (May 12) at South Surrey Athletic Park.
Under sunny skies, the Tritons battled the Mariners in the first game, but ultimately lost, 6-3.
They made it up with a 2-1 win in the next game, before heading to Richmond’s Latrace Field to play the Delta Blue Jays Tuesday (May 14), where they won, 5-1.
The team, currently seventh in the British Columbia Premier Baseball League (BCPBL) standings, have been playing well for the most part so far this season, head coach Tyler Lawson said.
“Our pitchers have been fantastic, they’ve constantly given us a chance to win every game. We’ve played great defence early as well. Our hitting hasn’t been as consistent as we’d like, but we’re putting together good at-bats and I believe if we keep doing that, our luck shall start to change,” he said.
Moving forward, he’s hoping to see a little more consistency in their game.
“When we play our style of ball, we’re a really tough team to beat. We’ve got to find a more consistent way to play our brand of baseball.”

Pitcher Ben McKinnon is one of the top pitchers in the country, Lawson noted, who has been their No. 1 go-to in the pitching rotation, and has also been swinging a great bat, while Devin Wood “has been lights out for us on the mound.”
Jaxon Mosher is another pitcher who has really impressed so far, and Kadyn Armitage has been “another huge bright spot” as shortstop, while adding Sajan Kooner has been the best hitter to start the year, leading the team with a .360 batting average. Mason McCleary has had a great year at the plate so far, an “impact bat” for the team, and Vasya Seymour – one of the best catchers in the country – has been “a brick wall” behind the dish, able to stop the run game before it eeven starts, said Lawson.
He credits the entire team, staff and everyone in the Tritons organization for their hard work, and encouraged the community to come and support the team when they play at home in South Surrey Athletic Park, complete with a concession that offers all the ballpark favourites, including hot dogs.
“If you’re not familiar with the White Rock Tritons or the PBL it’s the best high school baseball in the province and arguably in the country. These are elite, high school baseball players who will be moving onto play college and even possibly professional baseball,” he said.
“The atmosphere at South Surrey Athletic Park is awesome. Also, the majority of our roster is all kids born and raised in the White Rock/South Surrey area – come cheer your local, community kids on!”
The senior White Rock Tritons have another double header vs. the Abbotsford Cardinals this weekend, playing on Saturday (May 18) at noon and 2:30 p.m., but at Delair Park in Abbotsford. Their next home game is Sunday (May 19) vs. the Langley Blaze at South Surrey Athletic Park at noon.
The U16 White Rock Junior Tritons also play a May 18 double header at South Surrey Athletic Park, at noon and 2:30 p.m., while the Bantam U15 Tritons play a double header Saturday (May 18) vs. Bantam North Shore Twins in North Vancouver.
